Pollinating Indoor Plants Without Bees Cloning Tomato Plants




Have you ever wondered how plants in an indoor aquaponics system get pollinated?  This is a bit of an issue because no one wants bees living inside their house.  Well, my husband has found a very simple way to pollinate the vegetable plants growing in our basement using a tiny paintbrush. 

He is also "cloning" the tomato plants in our aquaponics system and planting the new plants in our outdoor gardens.  Tomato plants have a unique quality which allows you to clip their branches and replant them to start a new tomato plant.  We have been very successful cloning the tomato plants growing in our aquaponics system. We automatically have a jump-start on our outdoor tomato plants because the new cloned plants start out around 8-12" tall. 







In his latest video, Todd will show you how he pollinates and clones our plants.  During the video he also, ironically, gets stung by a random bee that made its way into our house!

Indoor Grow Lighting Explained

  
Using homemade fixtures and off the shelf light bulbs you can grow your own food year round.  Heres a link to how I built mine.  There are some basic terms and features to understand before you dive in and I hope to explain those terms here.
 
 

 
The first thing to consider when choosing lights to grow indoor plants is color temperature. Color temperature is measured in Kelvins and is a measurement of a lights color spectrum. This normally ranges from about 2700K up to 6500K for most off the shelf light bulbs. Different color temperatures have different effects on your plants. The higher 6500K light will induce green leafy grow in your plants and is going to be at the heart of any grow light. 2700k light will induce flowering in plants and although this is not 100% needed for most plants it can help keep fruit production up in your plants. Anything in between 2700k and 6500k is not efficiently used by the plants and therefore should not be used in a grow light.
 
 


The next term to understand is lumens. Lumens is a measurement of light intensity and should be listed on most modern bulbs. The higher the lumen rating the more light power the bulb can produce for grow in your system. This is commonly confused with watts which are a measurement of power consumption and not the amount of light power that a bulb is capable of producing.

This leads into the next term which is lux. Lux is a measurement of lumens per square meter of space and is a great way to test your grow lights potential growing capability. You can use an app called RGB sensor for android to test your Lux power by installing the app and holding your phone at various levels under your light. This app also shows you the color temperature of the lights as well which can be handy to help you determine if you are getting the correct 6500k or 2700k spectrum.
Lastly, the terms watts should be understood. Again, this is not a measurement of anything more than how much electric energy a light bulb is using. The lower watt rating the better (given the same lumen rating). For example a CFL bulb might use 23watts of power to produce 1400 lumens but an LED bulb might only use 14 watts of power to produce the same amount of light power (lumens) making the LED the best value.
 
 


The more energy efficient you can make your grow lights that happier you will be with your energy bill! This is one of the many benefits of going with LED bulbs as much as possible. CFL bulbs also degrade over time so after a year or two you will notice a drop in light intensity. LED bulbs do not suffer from this degradation and also last much longer than CFLs.

Suburban Aquaponics Benefits of Indoor and Outdoor Gardening



Knowing the benefits of indoor gardening and outdoor gardening really helps when deciding which plants to grow in your aquaponics system, and which plants to plant outside.


Indoor gardening can be ideal during the colder months, and you have full control over the elements.  You decide when the lights come on, how much humidity, and the temperature.  Also, there are no pesky bugs to eat your plants.

Outdoors is wonderful, too.  You have all the light you need, height for tall plants, and room to plant whatever you want.

Urban Farming Guys in India



I woke up this morning to a cool e-mail from the Urban Farming Guys. Theyd gone to India, to the isolated city of Imph?l, to install a barrelponics system for an orphanage.

The e-mail contained three videos. The first two minutes of the first video gives you a glimpse of the barrelponics design they were installing. Then next 30 minutes of video mostly gives you a sense of the beautiful people they were serving, and the primitive conditions with which they had to work.

Thinking back, I initially didnt like the barrelponics system. The blue barrels and lack of aesthetics bothered me. But after over a year of trying to figure out elegant ways to create DIY systems one can create from local materials, the barrelponics concept is growing on me. And I think it would be possible to modify this system to make it less screamingly blue plastic DIY-ish. Anyway, check out at least the first couple of minutes of the Urban Farming Guys video if youre just interested in plumbing ideas. The rest of the video is fun if you want to experience another world.

Another cool thing I discovered this week is the website Gaisma, where for any major city in the world you can find sunrise, sunset, and averages for the amount of sunlight ("insolation" in kWh/day taking into account weather and cloudcover), the amount of rainfall, windspeed, and temperature. For example, here is a portion of the Gaisma page for Imph?l.

At a glance you can see the amount of sun a location gets in each month of the year, the average monthly temperature, and the amount of rain (you can change the units if youre not used to the default measurements (e.g., inches of rain versus mm of rain)). Using Gaisma.com for my location, I was able to calculate the amount of rainfall I could expect per year on my greenhouse, in case I wanted to limit my rainwater harvesting to the relatively-clean plastic roof over my garden. In my case, it comes out to almost 2500 gallons per year for my little 8x12 greenhouse. Crazy!

Making an Indoor System

The last weekend in March I will be presenting a workshop at the Home Grown Institute Conference.

The conference will be held at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, in NW Philadelphia with the theme "Springing Good Intentions Into Action.” There will be over 50 home-scaled workshops, including edible gardens, community and school gardens, seed-saving, soil enrichment, 4 season harvest, bees, chickens, worms, aquaponics, food preservation, fermentation, re-purposing, upcycling, and natural building.

Lots of fun!

Ill be putting on the aquaponics workshop, demonstrating the construction of three different systems:
  • An aquaponic windowfarm, using recycled water bottles
  • A apartment/patio system
  • An outdoor system using stock tanks
All the systems Im demonstrating emphasize putting together something relatively nice-looking out of local parts on a budget. In my own aquaponics journey, I went straight from a windowfarm to a system made from stock tanks. But I can imagine many people would want to start with something in between. So Ive been playing...

First, structure. I like the look of wire shelving. But heavy-duty wire shelves can put you back a pretty penny. Luckily, Target carries a small three-tiered set of wire shelves for just $19.99 as part of their Room Essentials line. The shelves can carry a moderate load, particularly if the load is evenly distributed, such as would be the case with the flat bottom of a fish tank, or a flat bottomed grow bed.

Second, the fish tank. Im fine with a 5-gallon water jug, but my daughter really liked the idea of an actual fish tank, where you could clearly see the fish inside. I was happy to find a 10-gallon tank at PetSmart for under $14.00. That would work just fine for a tank located under the growbed with a pump inside. Or I could cut a 1" hole near the top with a diamond hole saw if I wanted to have a "Constant Height of Fish Tank" configuration with a pump in a sump tank.

Finally, the growbed and sump. Ive used concrete mixing tubs in the past, at least for a grow bed. But TC Lynx over at the Aquaponics Gardening community mentioned that she uses bus tubs for a demonstration system she packs along when shes selling her wares at the farmers market. Bus tubs are sturdy, designed to carry a load of dirty dishes from a table to the dish-washing part of a restaurant kitchen. They are also compact enough that theyre still luggable, even when filled with gravel. I was able to find 7" deep bus tubs online from a variety of sellers. I decided to get three: one for a sump, a second for a media growbed, and a third for a floating raft grow bed.

There are other configurations I can imagine, but this is simple to put together without putting much strain on the family budget.

Aquaponics Bell Peppers An indoor aquaponics favorite





Are aquaponics bell peppers better than any other? In my opinion, the bell peppers that I have grown here over the last year have been the best I have ever tasted. Over the years we have tried to grow sweet bell peppers in our gardens many times and due to the short growing season here in Michigan we rarely got much of a crop. That was one of the reasons I decided to grow them indoors, year round production!



I had seen other gardeners overwintering bell peppers in green houses and thought that this would be perfect for our indoor aquaponics system since we would not have to worry about the short growing season. I decided this would be one of the first things I planted in the system when I first got started.



Two of the six bell pepper plants that I have currently have been in the system for just over a year and have been producing in cycles ever since. Each cycle they seem to get stronger and stronger and produce more each time. I also added four more plants to the system out of our square foot gardens from last year for them to overwinter in the system. I was planning on putting them outside this summer but have since decided to leave them in full time. During this last round of production I harvested over 30 peppers of various sizes. the largest ones coming from the oldest more well established plants.



The plants seem to work in cycles in which they will grow, produce new leaves and flowers, then pollinate and produce peppers. Once they reach maturity the leaves begin to yellow and die back and an explosion of new growth follows. Each time this cycle repeats the production gets just a bit better.

I dont know how many years the plants will survive in the system or how production will continue but if things happen hey way they have been we will be harvesting 70-100 peppers per year!



We have tried growing many different things in our system here - beans, tomatoes, dill, oregano, kale, lettuce, etc. The Bell peppers have been the most fun to grow, the best producers for us, and they taste amazing! You can pick them before they turn red for a standard green bell pepper. These are great for salads and cooking. You can also let them fully ripen into a bright red sweet pepper for use in cooking or just to eat like an apple. I never though I would see our daughters just eating bell peppers right off the plant but with these they are like candy.
