I responded, saying something to the effect of "Heck yes!" and began a whirlwind journey creating the book I wish I could have bought, back when I started into aquaponics in the spring of 2010.

The Complete Idiots Guide to Aquaponic Gardening (CIG to AG as I came to know it) was a labor of love. I did get paid, but this was a work for hire deal, which means I dont get royalties on book sales. Given the way my head works, thats actually really great for my sanity. The book pulls heavily from the collective wisdom currently available via online forums, innumerable scholarly articles, conferences, and endless youtube videos. So I would have felt guilty getting royalties for this book. However, I did put many, many hours into crafting the book, and that labor deserved some payment.

I find several instances where I wish I could edit the English just one more time to make it read more smoothly. And the glossary includes one problematic typo - nitrite misspelled as nitrate in the definition of cycling (p. 306), but the definition in the body of the text on page 126 is correct.

It will be interesting to see what folks say. I read this book knowing the hours I spent gaining the knowledge contained in each paragraph, not to mention the additional hours it took to distill that knowledge into comprehensible prose. Only I and a few others know how many authorial "darlings" were killed during the creation of this book. If you were one who read an early draft, I think youll agree the final product is far superior to what you saw.

I hope the book helps people make the transition from hearing about aquaponics to confidently embracing aquaponics as part of their lifestyle. In the mean time, Im thrilled to have the book itself, with an index! What I would have given for such an index three years ago! It took me FOREVER to water after I planted, especially since I didnt want to wash away the fragile plants I had just planted.

What the grower must understand where they previously had soil acting as a buffer as well as providing nutrient, in hydro & aeroponics it is down to the grower to ensure the pH and nutrient remain stable and accurate.

Many soil growers enjoy the low cost & low maintenance of working with soil despite the traditionally slower growth rates by adding air pumps porous air rings many growers report up to 50% increase in yield along with growth rates than can only been compared to aeroponics.

In conclusion it really depends on an individuals circumstances many growers use a combination, keeping stock or mother plants in soil, Using Aeroponics for rooting cuttings enabling rapid root and vegetative growth at very early stages and flowering in N.F.T or flood and drain.

Flood and Drain

Flood & Drain or Ebb & Flow is a very popular method of growing especially for first time growers as it is easy to gage the moisture within the cubes and making it easier for the grower to coax the roots out without over watering.

The best medium for Flood & Drain tables undoubtedly PH stable expanded clay pebbles, which can be laid directly on the bed or put in pots. You will need to cover the table to exclude light or algae will be a big problem. Flood and Drain uses two cycles to feed oxygen and Nutrients to the roots.

These are the Flood Cycle, and the Drain Cycle.

FLOOD CYCLE

You flood the roots with nutrients, and expel all "dead air" from around the roots.

DRAIN CYCLE

After the Flood Cycle (2 to 15 mins) the nutrients drain quickly to draw or "suck" fresh oxygen into the roots as the nutrients drain out and at the same time, leaving the roots damp with nutrient.

Sound Complicated? Its as easy as Pump on and Pump off!

We usually would advise people to keep an eye on their plants. If the stem and leaves wilt, then increase the number of floods. If the leaves wilt with yellowing of the leaves; you may have too many floods and the roots are drowning or rotting. Immediately increase the amount of time between flooding.

Nutrient Changes should be performed regularly, if you have no electronic test equipment. Flush the expanded clay every 4-8 weeks with water, just in case any nutrients build up on the expanded clay. This can occur if the plants use a lot of water, and leave the nutrient behind. This is called salt build up. Some people get this problem, some dont.

Clean the filter if the system is not draining quickly. Flood and Drain is a very high powered system, and will give you much higher yields than similar systems. You will have fun with Flood and Drain.

NFT

Nutrient Film Technique is uniquely simple. It involves a shallow film of nutrient solution constantly recirculating past the roots of your plants. Nutrient solution is pumped from the tank to the channel, over the plants roots and back into the tank.

Its this recirculating film that differentiates N.F.T from other hydroponic increasing methods. Sperader Mats are used on N.F.T systems to make sure the water spreads evenly across the channel, it also provides an easy way for the roots to grow throughout the spreader mat and hold themselves above the water alowing the root better acsess to oxygen.

The key to N.F.T is to have the root system of the plants well established. The most common fault in N.F.T is trying to apply the plants to the beds before they have established a good root structure, this causes to Rockwool cubes to instead become water logged this can cause detrimental effects upon your plants.

If you are concerned about this problem you can either put the N.F.T. pumps onto a timer so they are running periodically, or alternatively increase the slope so the plant has less access to the water.

Aeroponics

Once you have become familiar with the basics you may wish to experiment with Aeroponics to attempt to increase your yield. However we must advise caution with this and advise any aeroponics system to be a Dual Flow system using Aeroponics & Flood and Drain or N.F.T.

As aeroponics sprayer nozzles are notorious for blockages, for this reason we also recommend aeroponics systems should be run with Liquid Oxygen to help prevent blockages.

In aeroponic systems the plants grow in an enclosed chamber and require a water pump, air pump, air stone and sprayer nozzles. The spray nozzles are placed within the grow chamber so that the roots of your plants are sprayed directly with your nutrient solution and keep them close to 100 per cent relative humidity. This allows the roots to grow in the air and get the maximum oxygen possible to grow.

The best use of an aeroponic system is for propagation. It stimulates the best growth for rooting plants and results in strong roots and good yield. One of the most popular uses of Aeroponics is in the propagation stage of the plants growth. Its used to get the root thought the starter cubes and then plants are commonly transplanted onto the system in which is designed for more mature pants.

The rainforest is a popular propagation unit in that it has a deep growth chamber, which is half filled with the nutrient solution, thereby making it an aero-hydroponic system. A submersible pump draws water up a central tube to the top of the root chamber where the jet of water hits a curved plate, causing the solution to be sprayed horizontally onto the roots in the spray zone.

The circle of water (not a true spray) created then falls back into the reservoir to provide gas exchange. It has no extra aeration for the nutrient solution. Roots also grow in the spray zone. The spray is created by injecting nutrient solution, at relatively low water pressure through strategically placed nozzles.

Creating An Aquaponics System

We constructed two aquaponics systems over the course of three days. Building an aquaponics system required a lot of experimentation and trial-and-error in order to determine how to best assemble the systems so that they would operate efficiently. A lot of the materials that we used were common and reusable items, such as the buckets, tubs, and tubing. Using these materials makes the system more cost efficient and easier to repair for the residents that will be using it, and it also saves money to build.

Clay Bed System:

A group of students was in charge of the task of crushing large pieces of red clay for the Clay Bed System. Once we crushed the clay into smaller pieces, we washed them in buckets of water to rid the clay of the dust that had accumulated on them. This is so that the dust will not clog the system. We then placed the clay into a large rectangular container at a downhill slope. The reason we sloped the clay downwards is so that when the water enters the clay bed from the sedimentator and the collector, it will easily trickle down and exit on the other side. We also placed plants into the clay so that they will receive nourishment from the water. The fish-rearing tank, sedimentator, collector, and clay bed were all connected to each other with tubes to allow the water to flow through all of the parts in the system. The water continually flows out of the fish-rearing tank and into the clay bed where it is filtered. The water is then recycled back into the tank.

Nutrient Film Technique System:

The Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) system involved more experimentation than the clay bed system in determining how to best connect the various parts together. The first step in building this system involved assembling the smaller parts together. In one of the filtration buckets, we filled the bottom with large rocks and put a large sheet of cotton over it, then layered smaller gravel on top of the cotton, put another sheet of cotton on top of it, and so on, until the bucket was filled to the top. This allows the water to filter through the bucket. We also altered many of the materials in order to fit the various parts of the system together. We cut holes into the tall white tubes with scissors, which was a difficult task, so that we could fit and connect the pipes through it. We also had to cut the pipes with a saw so that they would fit with each other.

Once the NFT system was assembled, we experimented with how to best arrange all of the parts together, similar to putting together the pieces of a puzzle. When we turned the system on and the water began flowing through, we discovered some leaks in the system, but were able to fix them by raising or lowering the buckets or by patching up faulty holes in the pipes. In the final step, we placed the clay pieces that we crushed earlier into plastic cups and put seedlings on top of it. We then placed these cups into the holes in the large pipe. The water flows through this pipe and the clay cleans and filters the water, while the water sustains the small seedlings. Similar to the clay bed system, the water flows out of the fish-rearing tank and through the various parts of the system, where the water is filtered and goes back into the tank.

Finally, and most importantly, the aquaponics system involves raising fish! The tilapia was kept in a large tank indoors. We used a large net to catch them in order to weigh them and calculate the starting weight of the fish. The younger tilapia was kept in tanks outdoors with netting over the top to prevent them from jumping out of their tanks. They are fed about once every two to three hours, except during the night, to ensure continued growth. Once the systems were completed, the tilapia was brought over and put into the large tanks, where they will be reared to provide food for families.

Square Foot Gardening with Aquaponics

A Grow Bed with a Grid

I like the idea of square foot gardening - marking your growing space into square patches that are each about one square foot in area. But since I have these oval rubbermaid tanks, I hadnt wrapped my mind around how to do the marks.

But this past February I decided to pay attention and figure something out. I took some thin rope and black binder clips. The binder clips can be the small ones that hold 3/8-inch of paper. This allows them to grab onto the edge of the lip of the rim securely. Then the thin rope is tied between the handles of the binder clips on opposite sides of the grow bed.

When I initially created the grid, the rope was slack. Heres where the rounded edges come in handy. I moved one of the binder clips for each pair around the lip so the distance between the two clips was smaller. I re-tied the rope between the clips, then slid the clip back into position. This made the rope taught.

Once I was done, I broadcast seeded the squares, as well as planting my floating raft. I also added seed to bare patches in my two grow beds that still had plants that had survived the winter. Heres the map I drew for myself.

I planted seeds on 2/16, and a month later the bok choy, turnips, and radishes have germinated. Im starting to see hints of cabbage and leek, and my carrots and beets are still AWOL. Im sure they would have germinated more quickly inside, but direct seeding is much easier. And even though most of the nights since February 16th have dipped below freezing, the temperature of the water in the fish tanks has held steady at 40-50 degrees, as measured by my "through the cover" meat thermometer.

My tank temperature was still 38 degrees on February 23rd, even though night-time temperatures had dipped well below freezing for six nights in a row leading up to this picture.
